Chemical fibers have a relatively short history, having been known for just over 100 years. However, they have advanced natural fibers in terms of their use.

The first chemical fiber that was created was rayon, in an attempt to imitate natural silk, which is a fiber with a high cost and difficult to obtain. At the first, rayons were known as artificial silk.
