It used to be that there was no option of getting the wrong shoe when you were in a rush, as both shoes were identical. There was no left or right shoe.

Until 1850, shoes were made manually with a straight base that left no two shoes identical. It wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that the base was given some shape to make the shoes more comfortable and other details such as soles, closures and designs also began to be added to them.
